Gina Bornino Miller Gina Bornino Miller is a founder of Microbia, Inc. and serves as the board chair for Microbia Precision Engineering, Inc. Ms. Miller was president and general manager of Quantum's Storage Products Group from 1994 to 1996. Previously, she was vice president of corporate development and planning at Quantum. Prior to joining Quantum, Ms. Miller was director of strategic planning at Silicon Graphics.

Richard Bailey, Ph.D. Rich Bailey serves as the chief executive officer of Microbia Precision Engineering, Inc. He has led the Precision Engineering business since joining Microbia, Inc. in 2002. Prior to joining Microbia, Bailey was vice president of research and development in Monsanto's nutrition division. Bailey has over 30 years of experience focusing on the development of biomanufacturing processes for specialty chemicals through the genetic manipulation of microbes to optimize productivity. He has been involved in several successful product introductions including riboflavin (Vitamin B2), essential omega-3 fatty acids (docosahexanoic acid), specialty biopolymers, and amino acids. Bailey earned a B.S. in bacteriology from Washington State University and holds a Ph.D. in microbial physiology from Oregon State University. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Society of Industrial Microbiology.

Peter M. Hecht, Ph.D. Peter Hecht has served as Microbia, Inc.’s chief executive officer since its founding in 1998. In collaboration with the other founders, Hecht has assembled and integrated Microbia’s growing team of industry leading "drug hunters,” raised $231 million, and driven the execution of its strategy. Prior to founding Microbia, he was a research fellow at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. Hecht earned a B.S. in mathematics and an M.S. in biology from Stanford University, and holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California at Berkeley. He currently serves on the Director’s Council for the MIT Center for Cancer Research and the advisory board of Infante Sano.

Michael Higgins Michael Higgins serves as Microbia Inc.’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer. Prior to joining Microbia in 2003, Higgins held a variety of senior business positions at Genzyme Corporation, including vice president of corporate finance, where he played a leading role in mergers and acquisitions valued at more than $1.5 billion and equity financings that raised in excess of $500 million. Higgins also managed Genzyme's strategic planning process and oversaw the financial operations for all of Genzyme's business units. Higgins earned a B.S. from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.

Robert V. Schanefelt, Ph.D. Robert V. Schanefelt, Ph.D. retired in 2007 as vice president of global R&D for Tate & Lyle (formerly A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company). During his 37-year career with Tate & Lyle, Dr. Schanefelt also served as vice president of Staley R&D, was a part of the team that expanded Tate & Lyle’s food ingredient efforts in both development and customer technical support, managed industrial starch R&D, and helped build the biochemicals R&D team. Dr. Schanefelt has a Ph.D. in food science and biochemistry from Kansas State University. He retired from Tate & Lyle in April, 2007.
